SPACES - Alice Kemp

'This is Alices first exhibition since graduating from Falmouth College with a BA (HONS) in photography in 2005. Alice was born and bred in Easton, Bristol, and has been exploring her local landscape since she got her first camera age 9. While being taught to use a S.L.R. camera at Filton College she was encouraged to challenge and debate ideas on the ways photography is used as a medium to represent the world. Now working in medium format and in colour, Alice has spent a lifetime watching her community. Her images have a eerie quietness reminiscent of Andreas Gursky and Fay Goodwin. From the rows of terraced streets, the cemetery and the places where the community meets - the interior of a local pub through to the allotments of the city farm where she spent her teenage summertimes. Alice reminds us of a village life of the past when the population stayed where it was from the cradle to the grave. Empty of images of people we are left wondering where they have gone. Perhaps this is the story she has yet to tell?'
