GHOST ON THE ROCK - Images of Alcatraz

'In 1989 I first set foot on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. I had dreamed of the moment for many years. It was a powerful experience, one that stayed with me for the 17 years until my next visit in 2006. Exactly 43 years after it closed as a prison. That first visit was imprinted into my memory partly by the haunting images I couldn't capture on the cheap camera I owned back then. 17 years on, armed with a digital SLR camera I returned and fulfilled a dream ... to capture every image of every angle from every viewpoint. In 17 years it had deteriorated noticeably, and more areas were unfortunatley closed to the public. Still the feelings of fear and desolation pervade the monstrous stone buildings. The officers and wardens lived a normal everyday existence - the ruins of their homes and lives are equally as haunting.'
