Malcolm Spratt

URBAN TIGER

March 7 - April 4th 2008

Malcolm Spratt is a Bristol artist who now lives and works in Burnham-on-Sea. Malcolm worked as a keeper at Bristol zoo at one time and it was there that he fell in love with and started painting the Tigers.
'The majority of the Tigers I paint are in a surreal setting although some are in more natural habitat.
There can be an element of humour in some of the paintings, not always intentional. You may also need to take a second harder look to see what is different or missing.
There is a blend of the natural and unatural in these pieces of work, the intention is for the viewer to to become aware that these beautiful creatures are fast vanishing from our world.
Even in the portraits and Landscapes a Tiger gets in somewhere or somehow.'

Profile of the Artist:

Malcolm Spratt was born and bred in the Bristol area. From a very early age he has had a great interest in drawing and painting animals. He worked for many years at Bristol Zoo as an Animal Keeper looking after many of the animals. Among his favourites was the Tiger and he spent lots of time with the White Tigers on the Zoo's country estate. Many of his drawing and sketches have been published in the magazine for the Association of British Wild Animal Keepers. Malcolm studied at the Bristol School of Art. It was while working on a project in 2003 that he produced a painting of a Tiger in a grey office setting. This generated a lot of interest so became the first one in a series of 'Office Tiger' paintings. He has also produced works of Tigers in their natural environment and some others in different styles. Many of these pictures will be shown in this his first exhibition.
