Nicki Bowers - Paintings February 24th - March 31st 2006
Nicki's work covers the mediums of woodcut, oil, acrylics and water colour. 'The woodcuts are pieces in their own right, and the knife is used to find and 'draw' the image, sometimes also to cut deeply to acquire a sculptural feel. The individual pieces of wood can often guide the resulting image, as if one is working with the wood as opposed to using it as blank material. Many kinds of wood are used; the best being old, solid pieces found on the sea shore. The landscape oils are done with a palette knife and mainly stem from the landscapes of Exmoor, Italy and Spain. Others are abstract explorations in shape, colour and balance, as are the watercolours. I am inspired by caves, circles, bones, wings, light, memory, things beneath the surface and pieces of newspaper. Angels seem to be a strong theme at the moment. North American Indian, cave, Mexican and African arts have always stimulated my own.'
