Description

A 6 week course that will focus on weaving design for decorative purposes and/or artistic expression. We will practise making a design based on a landscape or abstract piece.

Suitable for those who have already done some weaving before (however little and however long ago) and would like to build on their weaving experience. Complete beginners will be considered if they contact the tutor in advance of booking.

Session 1

We will look at the main considerations for designing your weaving. We will discuss your interests and ideas of what you may wish to weave. Advice will be given on where to find suppliers for any additional yarns that you may wish to purchase. We will observe and practise techniques such as mottling, which you may wish to include in your design.

Session 2

We will learn how to draw up a “cartoon” or map for the weaving, alongside working on your weaving design by refining the choice of colours, textures and techniques. Practical technique work on Supplementary Warps and Wefts.

Session 3

Review of your weaving and design to take it forward. There will be a focus on choosing the warp and sett for your weaving. You may wish to make further samples or design decisions. More practical weaving techniques can be practised, depending on your design.

Session 4

Further sampling, design and preparation for weaving your chosen piece. Practical demonstration of techniques that have been requested by participants in previous weeks.

Further Information: Notes on warping-up and the techniques learnt will be provided. At each session, we will look at the work of a selection of tapestries by artist-weavers. Jackie will demonstrate the techniques and provide guidance and feedback. You will work at your own pace. There will be the option to weave at home between sessions if you wish.
