Description

Do you love dancing but struggle to hear the beat or recognise different rhythms from the music? Do you want to deepen your understanding, strengthen your musicality, improve your choreography or simply get more enjoyment from social dancing or listening to dance music? This course offers an introduction to music theory with a focus on dancers’ needs. No partner is needed.

This workshop is in two parts, but each part works as a standalone workshop so you are welcome to either and/or both. Part 1 focuses on swing rhythms, jazz and tango while part 2 focuses on latin and salsa.

The workshop will also be of interest to musicians who work with dancers, but no previous musical knowledge is assumed. We will cover a range of popular dance rhythms, such as swing, tango, jazz, latin and salsa, with a chance to practice basic steps and briefly explore the history and culture of the music before going on to analyse key examples of dance music in more depth.

By the end of the workshop you will have a better understanding of the importance of musical phrasing in dance as well as knowledge of important concepts such as beats and bars, time signatures, syncopation, clave patterns, musical structures and song forms. Practical exercises will enable you to put your new awareness into practice so that you can gain confidence and get more from dance music whether on and off the dance floor.

Materials List

Please wear flat, smooth soled shoes and a layer that you can take off for the practical element. Bring a notebook and pen.
