This course covers all things cyanotype and the results that can be achieved with a range of techniques. Cyanotype is an alternative photographic printing process dating back to the 1800s that produces blue prints, typically using coated paper and UV light. We will start by exploring the cyanotype process using a range of papers and different ways of coating paper. During the course, we will also experiment with wet cyanotypes, bleaching and toning your prints and making cyanotypes on fabric. We will mix cyanotypes chemistry during the sessions and expose prints using UV light boxes (and daylight, if it is available).
You can use a range of materials to make cyanotype prints, including natural objects such as flowers and leaves, as well as negatives. You can bring your own black and white negatives to print with. You will also be supported to make your own digital negatives, using acetate or transparency film.
By the end of the course, you will have a mini portfolio of experimental cyanotypes and the knowledge and skills to continue making your own prints at home.
Suitable for beginners as well as those with more experience.
The course takes place in the darkroom; a small space, which is accessed via stairs. We will be standing throughout the sessions. For the first session, we all meet in the cafe before making our way to the darkroom together.
The following materials will be provided:
- Cyanotype chemistry
- A5/A6Paper (between 180 and 300gsm)
- Light/white fabric, made of natural fibres
-Items of varying opacity/transparency (flowers, leaves, etc)
You are welcome to bring the following to personalise your cyanotypes (optional):
- White natural fabric (i.e., cotton) you are happy to print on (t-shirt, tote bag, pillow case, etc). Synthetic materials will not work.
- Items of varying opacity/transparency (flowers, leaves, etc)
- Negatives (film or digital) drawings or writings on transparency film or acetate
Bring an apron to protect your clothes.
Please note: the cyanotypes you make in class may still be wet at the end of the session. Bring something to transport wet prints in (e.g a carrier bag or blotting paper).
Please get in touch if you have any additional needs that would be helpful for us to know about, and we will try to arrange adjustments for you to better access the workshop. If you need to bring a carer with you, please let us know in advance so we can ensure there is enough space. Email us on admin@bristolfolkhouse.co.uk or call us on 01179262987.
Please note: All 10, and 12 week courses have a half term break in the middle. For term dates please visit our Contact us page. We are not open on bank holiday Monday’s and any class that falls on these days will be made up at the end of term.

Latecomer
If a course has already started, please call the office as it may be possible to join after the start date. This may only be possible if the course is not already full, if it is not disruptive for the other students and you are aware that you have missed a percentage of the course and the tutor will not have time to catch you up. This will be at the discretion of the Folk House. We run our courses termly, so it might be best to start at the beginning of the course.
