The transverse ocarina is a ceramic wind instrument similar to tin whistle and recorder, with a 'pure', or 'ethereal' tone. The instrument has been used to play a wide range of music including lyrical melodies to high-tempo dance tunes. They work particularly
well for Balfolk and Scottish tunes.
Now you can try the instrument for yourself in this workshop appropriate for all. Instruments will be available to borrow, or you can bring your own if you wish.
The workshop is taught using Alto G ocarinas, and if you bring your own instrument it must be a 10, 11, or 12 hole Alto or soprano G ocarina, and be tuned properly. Transverse ocarina is not the same as the 4 / 6 hole 'English pendant' ocarina, and pendant ocarinas are not suitable for this workshop.
You'll learn all of the essential playing skills, including holding the instrument, breath control, and the fingerings from Robert. Robert has been playing ocarinas since 2011, and often plays ocarina at Irish sessions around Bristol. By the end you'll be playing some folk tunes.
Robert teaches phrase by phrase, starting with common fingering and rhythm patterns to get them into your muscle memory. Playing melodies builds upon these, practiced slowly at first. You can learn by ear or with sheet music, whichever you prefer.
Note that as we are using the tutor's instruments, the workshop isn't suitable for people who vape or smoke unless you have your own instrument.
The workshop will be taught using Alto G ocarinas, and instruments will be available to borrow. You can bring your own instrument if you wish but it must be in G and be tuned properly.
Please note that 4 / 6 hole 'English pendant' ocarinas will not work for this workshop. Also note that as we are using the tutor's instruments, it isn't suitable for people who vape or smoke unless you have your own instrument.
Please get in touch if you have any additional needs that would be helpful for us to know about, and we will try to arrange adjustments for you to better access the workshop. If you need to bring a carer with you, please let us know in advance so we can ensure there is enough space. Email us on admin@bristolfolkhouse.co.uk or call us on 01179262987.

Latecomer
If a course has already started, please call the office as it may be possible to join after the start date. This may only be possible if the course is not already full, if it is not disruptive for the other students and you are aware that you have missed a percentage of the course and the tutor will not have time to catch you up. This will be at the discretion of the Folk House. We run our courses termly, so it might be best to start at the beginning of the course.
