The Bristol Folk House is a 100-year-old Adult Education Centre, providing a large range of part time courses and workshops for the community. Our aim is to provide a community space for generations to come and increase our appeal to the wide community, including improving our accessibility.

This role is to provide excellent customer service to our weekend customers throughout the year within the ethos and spirit of the Bristol Folk House. To ensure the smooth running of all events and be a point of contact for promotors, performances, café staff, volunteers, and customers.

We are looking for someone who is reliable and sensible, with the confidence to work alone and have excellent customer service skills.

The Bristol Folk House has had a tough year, like so many hospitality and event spaces, and we are looking forward to welcoming new staff to our team to help us rebuild this winter.

REPORTS TO

Head of Operations

 

HOURS

  • Shifts arranged on a rota basis in advance.
  • Commitment of between 3 – 6 evenings per month (dependant on what is in the programme)
  • Friday, Saturday and occasional Sundays – usual hours will be 5pm – 12am (event dependant).

 

SALARY

£8.91 per hour

The successful candidate will be required to start as soon as possible for training and for the start of our Autumn Term, September/October.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Smooth running of events including set up and take down.
  • Customer services – greeting and welcoming customers.
  • Managing ticket lists.
  • Liaising with promoters, performers, room hirers when required.
  • Provide security for the building and oversee customer movement throughout the building and clearing bottle necks.
  • Maintain a high standard of tidiness throughout the building during events.
  • Promote events on social media and our website.
  • Undertake regular administrative tasks during quiet periods and carry out other tasks as required.

 

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

Essential:

  • Proven ability to work effectively without direct supervision.
  • An honest and reliable individual.
  • A team-player who is personable and has the ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels both internally and externally.
  • Excellent levels of customer service.
  • Able to sustain a proactive worth ethic throughout long and late shifts.
  • A polite manner, and a calm and professional attitude.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills (including a good standard of spoken English).
  • Experience of handling money.
  • Good mental arithmetic skills and ICT skills.
  • Knowledgeable interest in and empathy for the arts, music (Folk) and wellbeing.  
  • Applicants must be over 18 years old; they may be required to stand in for bar staff.

Desirable: 

  • Experience of Box Office or Front of Housework.
  • Technical knowledge including P.A. systems, projectors, audio equipment and lighting.
  • First aid, Fire safety or/and bouncer training.

Please note:

  • This role involves lifting of equipment, tables and chairs as well as some climbing of ladders.
  • Currently, we do not have step free access or accessibility facilities. Parking is not always guaranteed but can be arranged.
