About

Ni Hao everyone! My name is Sidney. I come from a beautiful historic town in China called Yangzhou in Jiangsu Province straddling the Grand Canal north of the Yangtze River which won the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honour Award in 2006. I consider myself very lucky to have the opportunity to grow up in such a wonderful and culture-enriched city and I want to share my understanding and insight of this vast and culturally profound country and its language with people from all over the world.

I obtained my Bachelor Degree in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language from Nanjing Audit University. After graduation in 2013, I went to Thailand to live and work as a Chinese language teacher for 2 years through a placement scheme by The Confucius Institute HQ and the Department of Education in China. This experience not only gave me the opportunity to polish up my teaching skills, but also made me realise that language teaching is something I really want to do as part of my career.

I have always loved language and have always wanted to work in the language industry. After two years of teaching in Thailand, I came to England to pursue my Master Degree in Chinese-English Translation at University of Bristol. I am so glad I picked this buzzing vibrant city to study and then settle for long-term as I never for a second want to leave. Now apart from teaching Chinese language in Bristol, I also work as a freelance English-Chinese translator and Chinese social media marketing specialist, so call me a language guru if you want!

I believe learning a language is more about understanding the culture and logic of thoughts behind it as languages are reflections of these two things. That is why in my class, you will never just end up with words and grammars because I will always pop in some culture briefing here and there so you will have a much more immersive learning experience!
