Whether your writing is inspired by adventures to faraway lands or the changing seasons in your local woods, this workshop will give you an introduction to writing travel and nature.
Through exercises and group work, you will learn how to develop your ideas into engaging pieces of writing; how to make stories with observations, field notes and memories; how to develop your writing voice and craft a narrative arc; how to write vividly about place; techniques for combining the subjective with history, culture, ecology, deep time and memory; and, most importantly, how to be a good travel companion.
We will touch on how travel writing has moved on from its colonialist past, and what nature writing means in a time of climate breakdown. The workshop will combine teaching, short writing exercises, group discussion and feedback sessions, as well as outdoors techniques that I have found particularly useful in tuning into place. Suitable both for experienced writers and those just starting out.
Bring a pen and a notebook.
Depending on weather, this workshop may include a walk up to Brandon Hill for some observational writing exercises, if you are unable to do this due to mobility issues, please contact admin@bristolfolkhouse.co.uk and we will make sure the class is adapted for this.

Latecomer
If a course has already started, please call the office as it may be possible to join after the start date. This may only be possible if the course is not already full, if it is not disruptive for the other students and you are aware that you have missed a percentage of the course and the tutor will not have time to catch you up. This will be at discretion of the Folk House. We run our courses termly, so it might be best to start at the beginning of the course.
