Courses description

Sgraffito is a technique where potters paint a layer of colour onto a clay item, let it dry slightly and then carve into it to reveal the colour underneath. This is a great way to combine illustrative and design techniques with making pottery.

Your day will start with making a slab built a vase and a shallow bowl using a mold, and you will be shown how to finesse your pottery by your tutor. You will then paint the pieces your chosen colour with slip (coloured liquid clay) and leave it to dry over lunch. You can spend the whole afternoon carving into your piece, which will give you plenty of time to create an intricate design. You may prepare a design in advance. Suitable for beginners.
