Courses description

What can rockpools teach us about how to write poetry? What might these watery spaces have to say about scale, change, and attention? For the poet T. S. Eliot, peering into a rockpool offered a model for the process of poetic creation, with the anemone he glimpsed as a child re-emerging years later, ‘charged with great imaginative pressure’; in ‘Rhapsody on a Windy Night’, he circles back to ‘a crab one afternoon in a pool’ who ‘Gripped the end of a stick which I held him’. Rockpools are places of drama and flux, the site of fights between prawns and daily tidal shifts, of moulting crabs and scurrying shrimp. In this workshop, we will spend time imaginatively scrutinising the space of the rockpool, crafting new poems that pay attention to the lifeforms in and around the rocky intertidal shore. We will play with scale and perspective, reimagining our relationship with the coast and its creatures.
