Creating a memorable character is one of the most important aspects of writing a novel or short story - arguably the most important. How many stories have we read that fell flat because we were given no reason to invest in the main character? Without the anchor point of a dynamic and interesting protagonist, the most tightly plotted story with the most fluent and fluid prose can feel ultimately hollow.
In this in-depth workshop, join novelist and poet Stefan Mohamed to explore the importance of character when planning a story. Stefan will share his experience of developing characters for his four published books - and many other unpublished ones! - detailing his process and the lessons he has learned over more than 15 years of novel writing. The workshop will also include time for students to write, and a period of discussion where tutor and students can offer friendly, constructive feedback.
Stefan Mohamed graduated from Kingston University in 2010 with a first class degree in creative writing. Later that year, he won the Sony Reader Award for Unpublished Writers, a category of the Dylan Thomas Prize, for his novel Bitter Sixteen. The book was published in 2015 by Salt Publishing, followed by its sequels Ace of Spiders and Stanly’s Ghost in 2016 and 2017, and a standalone novel, Falling Leaves, in 2018.

Latecomer
If a course has already started, please call the office as it may be possible to join after the start date. This may only be possible if the course is not already full, if it is not disruptive for the other students and you are aware that you have missed a percentage of the course and the tutor will not have time to catch you up. This will be at discretion of the Folk House. We run our courses termly, so it might be best to start at the beginning of the course.
