The Irish Whistle (penny-whistle) is a marvellous instrument as heard at traditional Irish music sessions the world over. It features on recordings by The Pogues, The Dubliners, Bob Geldof, Paul Simon, Noel Gallagher, Bryan Adams, Simple Minds, Afro-Celt Sound System, Sinead O'Connor and others plus on movie soundtracks (notably on Titanic and others). Now it will be your turn to give it a go at this three-hour, user-friendly beginner level workshop.
Bring along your own whistle in the key of D (widely available including at HOBGOBLIN MUSIC which is next door to Bristol Folk House). This little instrument is definitely not a recorder so make sure that you bring an actual penny-whistle along.
Easy to understand TAB and helpful notes are provided by your tutor Aidan Sheehan. He has been playing Irish music forever and also hosts the Bristol Folk House monthly Monday Irish music sessions in the Cafe. It's a lovely atmosphere - come to these and practice playing your whistle!
Besides several Irish pieces we will also learn a few simple well-known tunes just to ease you into it plus we may try just a little bit of Kwela music for added fun. We will play everything at a slower speed.
Student testimonials:
I must shake your hand Aidan. That was marvellous. You're the most non-pedantic music teacher I have ever had. You make it fun. I have learned so much.
You kept everyone smiling. Humour is a great way to learn. It takes the pressure away. Thanks.

Latecomer
If a course has already started, please call the office as it may be possible to join after the start date. This may only be possible if the course is not already full, if it is not disruptive for the other students and you are aware that you have missed a percentage of the course and the tutor will not have time to catch you up. This will be at discretion of the Folk House. We run our courses termly, so it might be best to start at the beginning of the course.
