Courses description

In this interactive workshop we will explores the limits of free speech and personal liberty, drawing on John Stuart Mill's philosophy and applying it to today's most pressing debates - from hate speech to cancel culture and online regulation.

Through discussion and lots of real-world case examples (using video clips) we will critically examine the nature of freedom, the conflicts between freedom and responsibility and the limits of tolerance. We will explore sections of Mill's important book On Liberty, as well as the ideas of other philosophers. We will evaluate whether any of these ideas are still relevant to our modern lives today.

There will be lots of opportunity for discussion, debate and dialogue!
