Courses description

Improve your ability to sight read single-line folk tunes from sheet music. This workshop is intended for players of all folk session instruments, including fiddle tin whistle.

In this workshop, you will learn to perform common melodic and rhythmic patterns by ear, and through practical exercises on your instrument. Once you can perform them, the patterns are associated with their equivalent visual representation in sheet music directly.

This approach to reading music bypasses the analytical step within mainstream music teaching methods. You will not need to name note positions, name fingerings, or figure out rhythms by consciously counting them.

This workshop is for you if mainstream approaches to learning to read music don't work for you. It is also for people who primarily learn by ear, and want to improve sight reading skills.

Please bring your instrument, and it will be assumed that you are comfortable with playing a D and G major scale.

This workshop does not address reading multiple melodic lines, and is not intended for piano / keyboard players wanting to improve their ability to read two hands at once.
