The first Saturday of this course begins with a brief introduction to fabrics, cutting and hand stitching, including, for example, learning how to hem a garment. This is followed by learning how to operate a sewing machine effectively and safely. You will get to grips with some essential machine techniques like making seams neatly, turning corners and even setting in a zip. Towards the end of the afternoon there will be time to cut out and sew a drawstring bag to hold your sewing equipment and the samples you have created. We will also plan the second Saturday afternoon's special project.
A pair of fabric scissors
Some pins and a spool or two of thread
One or two sewing needles
Tailor's chalk or pencil
Tape Measure or ruler
Notepad and pen
At the end of the first Saturday we will negotiate what fabric and notions you will need for your special project on the second Saturday.
Please note: All 10, and 12 week courses have a half term break in the middle. For term dates please visit our Contact us page. We are not open on bank holiday Mondays and any class that falls on these days will be made up at the end of term.

Latecomer
If a course has already started, please call the office as it may be possible to join after the start date. This may only be possible if the course is not already full, if it is not disruptive for the other students and you are aware that you have missed a percentage of the course and the tutor will not have time to catch you up. This will be at discretion of the Folk House. We run our courses termly, so it might be best to start at the beginning of the course.
