Courses description

The Virgin Mary and How Artists Create/d Her The Virgin Mary is only mentioned in a few lines of the Bible and yet she has inspired innumerable images and image-types from the Middle Ages to today. Drawing from the lecturer's own research and successful exhibition at the Getty Museum in 2023, this course will analyse how artists have long engaged with, and generated, Marian imagery. Such questions will also be covered: types of images of Mary and what they mean; how images of the Virgin were dressed and moved; how she has been depicted in poetry and song.

This workshop will encompass two hours of context and analysis of many amazing medieval examples of Marian images and works of art. A third hour will be reserved for discussion and for students to share their own experiences, interests or creative projects. The course is designed for students with all different backgrounds and interests and no prior art history training is expected or required; just an eagerness to learn and share knowledge openly.
