The Bristol Mandolin Guitar Ensemble & Avellana
Special guest Simon Leach percussion & contemporay dance.
An evening of Film music, hidden gems of contemporary jazz, Tango, Bach, Barock and more. The Bristol Mandolin and Guitar Ensemble plays a very varied repertoire including 20th cent. composers such as Bela Bartok and Gustav Holst, along with both standard (Tango, French
Chanson) and not so standard mandolin orchestra pieces (Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Middle Eastern Music).
For this evening’s concert they will be performing music from the movies and beyond. Pieces by Jean Claude Petit, Charlie Chaplin and of course the master himself Ennio Morricone. Be transported back to films like Jean de Floret, Once Upon a Time in the West and The Mission. The beyond will include music by Vivaldi, J.S.Bach, Eric Satie and one of The Beatles most of the wall compositions.
Avellana has become a well established act on the Bristol Jazz scene since it’s post lockdown formation. Expect sensitive pieces on the borders of contemporary classical and jazz. Paul Mahon (guitar) has played with the best UK jazz musicians such as Tina May, Peter King, John Parricelli and Jamie Cullum. Although a competent performer in many musical styles, he has always had a passion for Jazz that flourished through performing with the Pendulum big
band variously taking the guitar and bass chairs. Saxophonist Simon Greening is a familiar figure in the Bristol jazz scene, playing in several bands (including founding jazz combos Green in Blue and Avellana) arranging workshops, running jam sessions and other music events. Passionate about music in all forms, Simon loves to collaborate with many of the talented musicians in the Bristol area who share his musical passions.
?imon Leach is a multi-instrumentalist playing oud, guitar, percussion, piano and pipes and whistles from various musical traditions. Current bands include Chai For All and Hazir Middle Eastern ensemble. Simon also regularly plays music for improvised dance and works as a music therapist for MusicSpace. He is a keen contact improviser and can regularly be seen spinning through the air at Bristol CI dance jams
