Jim is an adult education tutor who teaches Philosophy in Bristol. He has an MA degree in the Philosophy of Education from the Institute of Education and has a passion for ‘Public philosophy’- making philosophy accessible to all and applicable to ‘everyday life’.
Jim has over 35 years working in Education, including the last 13 years as headteacher
of a school in Bristol.
Since 2023, he has worked at Stoke Lodge Adult Education centre in Bristol as a Philosophy tutor and has delivered many successful one-day Philosophy workshops on a variety of topics. Attendees at these workshops have ranged from 25 to 85 years of age and have come from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds.
He has taught philosophy courses at the Folk House since September 2025 including a 12 week Introduction to Philosophy, How to live a Good Life and the Philosophy of Justice. He is also the Philosophy tutor for Bristol U3a and facilitates two oversubscribed monthly groups.
Jim has given presentations to the Annual Philosophy for Children Conference-University of Bristol (in 2023) and has published articles both in Education and Philosophy journals. He recently published an article in the Philosophy Now magazine(June 2024)
His key interests include Ethics, The Philosophy of Education and Public Philosophy.
