Rob is passionate about the power of clear, concise, and creatively compelling factual writing in all its forms. That can range from journalism to history, blogs to social media posts, parish newsletters to promotional literature, and anywhere else students may identify a need for it. Rob teaches via discussion of forms and examples; students experimenting with writing exercises; then friendly feedback. As a lifelong learner himself (currently struggling with music) Rob believes in the transformative potential and sheer pleasure of education at any level and any age. He supports students with digital summaries of each class.
Rob trained as a newspaper journalist and has written thousands of headlines, newspaper columns, news stories and features, a PhD and some journalism history. He has also spent nearly twenty years teaching journalism students at university. He was highly commended in the British Regional Press Awards in 2016, and in the Hastings Book Festival short story prize in 2022. Rob, based in Bristol and recently semi-retired, likes to spend his free time walking in wild places and thinking up stories.
