This course is all about learning how to play the 5-string banjo in the clawhammer style! Clawhammer (or frailing) is actually the original way of playing the banjo, and is still popular today. You can play anything using this technique - folk, pop, rock, even classical. You will start with learning the basic technique, fundamentals of rhythm and then move on to learning how to play different tunes in a range of styles. You will also explore more advanced ideas like playing with others, composing, songwriting and even improvising.
Jacob Waller has been teaching banjo for 10 years now and playing music since he was a teenager, starting on bass guitar until he saw the banjo-shaped light! This course will give you the tools you need to start off learning this deceptively simple style, and you will receive lots of banjo tips and tricks, as well as guidance on how to think about music in bigger picture ways that will help you navigate the instrument.
I look forward to meeting you and starting you off on your banjo journey.

Latecomer
If a course has already started, please call the office as it may be possible to join after the start date. This may only be possible if the course is not already full, if it is not disruptive for the other students and you are aware that you have missed a percentage of the course and the tutor will not have time to catch you up. This will be at discretion of the Folk House. We run our courses termly, so it might be best to start at the beginning of the course.
