Courses description

This weekend workshop covers all things cyanotype and the results that can be achieved with a range of techniques. Cyanotype is an alternative photographic printing process dating back to the 1800s that produces blue prints, typically using coated paper and UV light. We will start by exploring the cyanotype process using a range of papers and different ways of coating paper. During the two day workshop, we will also experiment with wet cyanotypes, bleaching and toning your prints and making cyanotypes on fabric. We will mix cyanotypes chemistry during the sessions and expose prints using UV light boxes(and direct/strong sunlight, if it is available).

You can use a range of materials to make cyanotype prints, including natural objects such as flowers and leaves, as well as negatives. You can bring your own black and white negatives to print with. You will also be supported to make your own digital negatives, using acetate or transparency film.

By the end of the workshop, you will have a mini portfolio of experimental cyanotypes and the knowledge and skills to continue making your own prints at home.

Suitable for beginners as well as those with more experience.

The workshop takes place in the darkroom; a small space, which is accessed via stairs. We will be standing throughout the sessions. On the first day, we all meet in the Cafe before making our way to the darkroom together.
