Courses description

How to do Art History and Navigate Thousands of Years of Art

Art history can feel like a discipline that sits in an ivory tower. This workshop is run by a trained art historian with almost two decades of experience in the field and who wishes to lift the veil on the discipline.

In the workshop, we'll cover how:

  • Art historians looks at art and deduce its contexts and questions
  • Consider how to approach art historical articles in order to find inspiration and key information
  • Now to write on art in ways that both accurately capture a work and evokes imagination in the reader.

Students will also be shown all the websites and resources art historians use to find objects from all periods and regions of the world.

This workshop will begin with some basics and some context, before opening up to the students' individual interests, allowing the lecturer to show how to master these skills through relevant examples and encouraging enriching discussions.

The course is designed for students with all different backgrounds and interests and no prior art history training is expected or required; just an eagerness to learn and share knowledge openly.
