Courses description

This course explores a range of poetic forms and encourages you to develop your own practice of poetry. Afraid poetry is not for you? Remember - it began in the streets, at campfires, and through oral storytelling traditions. It is one of the oldest art forms, and it still thrives today in spoken word nights, slams, and song lyrics.

Afraid of a sonnet or a villanelle? Don't be - if Shakespeare were around today, he would be performing in poetry slams and writing for EastEnders! From structured forms to free verse, you will learn how different approaches can open up new creative possibilities.

If poetry at school left you cold, this course offers the antidote. Through practical exercises, playful exploration, and group discussion, you will discover that poetry can be enjoyable, flexible, and entirely your own. Bring along paper, pen, and an open mind!

By the end of the course, you will have tried a variety of poetic forms, written original work, and built confidence in your own poetic voice.

Tutor: Rosemary Dun, poet, performer, and founder of Big Mouth Cabaret, who has hosted spoken word, comedy, and music events across Bristol.
