Paul’s journey into the world of mosaic art began with a transformative trip to Barcelona in the 1980s where he was subconsciously inspired by the work of Antoni Gaudi. What started as a curious spark in Spain soon became a lifelong pursuit of craft and precision.
The foundation of Paul's thirty-five-year fascination was laid unexpectedly when he picked up a £1 copy of Mosaics in a Weekend in a remainder shop. From those humble, self-taught beginnings, his work has scaled significantly in both size and ambition. Paul moved from gifting small, personalised mementos to friends and family to executing rather larger installations, including a floor-to-ceiling mosaic bathroom in his own home and a sprawling outdoor bench in a Spanish holiday village capable of seating thirty people.
More recently Paul has spent time restoring ancient dry stone walls - a form of 3D mosaic - a similarly satisfying and meditative discipline.
Originally hailing from Halifax, Paul brings a relaxed approach to his craft. He views the process of mosaicing much like his other favourite pastimes—cryptic crosswords and reading James Joyce’s Ulysses—as a complex puzzle waiting to be solved. The act of hunting for the perfect piece to fit a design can induce a sense of mental absorption which can help students escape the stresses of daily life.
While Paul has previously hosted intimate workshops from his home studio, he is looking forward to joining the Folk House community for the first time this year. His teaching style is relaxed and aims to demystify the medium and make it accessible to everyone. Whether you are a complete beginner or looking to scale up your projects, Paul is dedicated to helping you find your own creative flow through the ancient and enduring art of mosaic.
