Discover the art of mosaic in this friendly, hands-on 6-week course. Perfect for beginners and improvers alike, you will be given a short introduction to the evolution of mosaic from the ancient to the modern, and will quickly move on to the key techniques needed to design and create two to three of your own mosaic pieces to take home.
You'll then explore a range of materials and adhesives and learn how to cut and shape tiles with confidence.
There will be reading material available to provide examples of completed work and plenty of opportunity to express your own creative ideas.
Through guided demonstrations and practical work, you will be introduced to mosaic methods, along with helpful design and installation tips. You will also learn how to use space and grout lines effectively to enhance your design.
The course will conclude with grouting, cleaning, and final touches, leaving you with one or more completed pieces and the skills to continue at home.
All materials will be supplied, but if you have broken crockery or other found objects that you wish to up-cycle then please bring them along.
No prior experience is needed - just bring your enthusiasm to try something new.
Paul Bulmer, the tutor, has been making mosaics for over 35 years.
Materials and tools will be provided but students are welcome to bring along broken crockery or other found objects to include in your projects.
Please get in touch if you have any additional needs that would be helpful for us to know about, and we will try to arrange adjustments for you to better access the workshop. If you need to bring a carer with you, please let us know in advance so we can ensure there is enough space. Email us on admin@bristolfolkhouse.co.uk or call us on 01179262987.
Please note: All 10, and 12 week courses have a half term break in the middle. For term dates please visit our Contact us page. We are not open on bank holiday Mondays and any class that falls on these days will be made up at the end of term.

Latecomer
If a course has already started, please call the office as it may be possible to join after the start date. This may only be possible if the course is not already full, if it is not disruptive for the other students and you are aware that you have missed a percentage of the course and the tutor will not have time to catch you up. This will be at discretion of the Folk House. We run our courses termly, so it might be best to start at the beginning of the course.
