In this workshop you will sculpt your own Ocarina which will produce its own unique and beautiful sound. In the first half of the workshop you will learn about and use the pinching technique to create the body of the Ocarina. You will then be guided on how and where to position holes within the body to bring it to life with song! In the second half you will have the opportunity to add surface texture design and coloured slips to your Ocarina to make it even more beautiful and personal to you.
This workshop is suitable for folks completely new to pottery as well as those with experience.
Your Ocarina will be fired and glazed by your tutor, ready for collection at a later date.
The ocarina belongs to a very old family of instruments, dating back over 12,000 years, which hold great significance in the Mesoamerican cultures. The most characteristic feature of an ocarina is the use of a hollow chamber instead of a tube for sound production. This hollow chamber is what makes the Ocarina's songs sound more soft and ethereal compared to other wind instruments. Ocarinas make stunning ornaments as well as functioning as an instrument.
Please bring your own apron and you are welcome to bring your own tools.

Latecomer
If a course has already started, please call the office as it may be possible to join after the start date. This may only be possible if the course is not already full, if it is not disruptive for the other students and you are aware that you have missed a percentage of the course and the tutor will not have time to catch you up. This will be at discretion of the Folk House. We run our courses termly, so it might be best to start at the beginning of the course.
