Create an engaging detailed holiday sketchbook double page spread made up of words and drawings. Consider how to best tell the story of exploring a new destination. Whilst this sounds simple, holidays usually involve a busy itinerary and demanding travel. What is realistic in terms of sketchbook work and what are the effective visual possibilities at our disposal? How can we develop themes and tell the unfolding story of our ongoing exploration?
We will look at drawing buildings and consider the often underused front elevation view of streets, then introduce simple sketch people to add life and scale to the scene. The importance of how to crop images within your pages and the overall graphic layout will be discussed. Hand-drawn typography, perhaps or even a collage of collected printed material might be incorporated into the page.
We will look to develop a rich tonal approach using water soluble graphite to compliment the line work and written words and provide page focus. The story telling sketchbooks of contemporary urban sketchers will be looked at as a starting point for further research.
This workshop will provide an immersive experience and a chance to consider a broad range of approaches to sketch book work - an ideal preparation as we think about possible summer adventures.
Andy's recent holiday sketches from the UK and abroad will be used as reference.
All reference photographs and art materials provided.

Latecomer
If a course has already started, please call the office as it may be possible to join after the start date. This may only be possible if the course is not already full, if it is not disruptive for the other students and you are aware that you have missed a percentage of the course and the tutor will not have time to catch you up. This will be at discretion of the Folk House. We run our courses termly, so it might be best to start at the beginning of the course.
