Courses description

Medieval European artists were faced with the difficult task of translating many complex ideas into visual forms that could be understood by the common viewer. What the study of medieval art clearly shows us is that the medieval artist relished and stepped up to that challenge. Medieval art is full of remarkable creative solutions from dynamic and bright abstraction to carefully planned combinations of media and the installations of such works into sites of ceremony and pageantry.

This workshop will provide an overview of medieval art, covering the gamut of media used in the medieval period and helping students to 'read' the meaning behind medieval materials, forms and symbols. We will also discuss the role and position of artists in medieval society and the influence of non-European cultures on the medieval artist.

No prior art historical knowledge necessary, just an eagerness to learn.
